.Sunil Chhetri, born on August 3, 1984, is an esteemed Indian footballer who currently holds the position of forward and serves as the captain for both Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League and the Indian national team. Renowned for his exceptional combination play, goal-scoring prowess, and remarkable leadership skills, Chhetri has established himself as one of the most prominent figures in Indian football. With an impressive record, he stands as the third-highest international goalscorer among active players, trailing only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Additionally, Chhetri holds the fourth position overall and is recognized as the Indian national team's most capped player and all-time leading scorer. His immense contributions to the sport have solidified his status as one of India's greatest footballers.

.Chhetri commenced his professional journey at Mohun Bagan in 2002, subsequently transferring to JCT where he impressively netted 21 goals in 48 matches. During the 59th Santosh Trophy hosted in Delhi, Sunil proudly represented the Delhi team. Throughout the tournament, he showcased his prowess by scoring six goals, including a remarkable hat-trick against Gujarat. Despite his contributions, Delhi unfortunately succumbed to Kerala in the quarter-finals. Notably, Chhetri also found the back of the net in that particular match. In 2010, he ventured overseas by signing with the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer, thus becoming the third prominent player from the South Asian subcontinent to do so. Following his stint abroad, he returned to the Indian I-League, playing for Chirag United and Mohun Bagan, before once again heading overseas to join Sporting CP in the Primeira Liga. During his time at Sporting CP, he primarily featured for the club's reserve team.

.Chhetri played a crucial role in securing victories for India in the Nehru Trophy in 2007, 2009, and 2012, as well as the SAFF Championship in 2011, 2015, 2021, and 2023. Additionally, he captained the Indian team to triumph in the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, which marked their qualification for the AFC Asian Cup after a 27-year hiatus. Notably, Chhetri showcased his skills by scoring two goals in the final of the 2011 tournament. In 2016, he led Bengaluru FC to clinch the silver medal in the AFC Cup. Chhetri's exceptional performances have earned him the prestigious AIFF Player of the Year award a remarkable seven times, in 2007, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018-19, and 2021-22.

Chhetri was honored with the Arjuna Award in 2011 for his exceptional accomplishments in sports, followed by the prestigious Padma Shri Award in 2019, which is India's fourth highest civilian award. In 2021, he made history by being bestowed with the Khel Ratna Award, the highest sporting honor in India, thus becoming the inaugural footballer to receive this esteemed recognition.
